1890s-1910 Bicycle Skirt

Folkwear's #209, "Walking Skirt" pattern, in a light cotton chino. Several large fabric-covered buttons (not visible in this photo) run down the center front seams. I made this to wear as part of my turn-of-the-century bicycling outfit. The whole outfit consists of a wide silk belt, cape, boater, corset girdle, petticoat and gold cameo necklace. I wore it with a guimpe because only the collar shows under the cape. The skirt is shown over the yoke petticoat.

During this era, short skirts and bloomer outfits were designed for "sporting" activities. However, ladies also wore full length skirts on their bicycles. I had decided to attend a GBACG event in the spring of 2010 - Victorian bicycling in the park. And I did, in fact, wear this while riding my bicycle. Ironically, we were the only ones that took the costume event literally and actually brought bikes. No surprise - my hem was covered in dirt and grease at the end of the day. But I'd predicted this -- black disguises grease and cotton is easily washable. So the skirt is as good as new. Hopefully, I'll get to wear it again for other outdoor costume events, with my mix-and-match Edwardian separates.
