1830s Chemise
After scaling up the pattern I made the following alterations, including 1/2" seam allowances: added 6.25" to the sleeve width, enlarged the bust gores to the dimensions of 8" wide, 7.5" long, and made the underarm gores 6" squares. The bust gores probably could have been a little narrower, but it gives the chemise a nice full front. I skipped the cuffs, and cut the sleeves on the selvage (an attempt to save time as there'd be no hemming). However, these selvages were ugly and I ended up binding the sleeves to finish them. For some reason I had a lot of trouble finishing the gores on the inside. A gore lining seemed too bulky. Plus, linings aren't indicated on the cutting diagram. For lack of a better method, I ended up sewing bias tape along the seam lines, as seen from this inside-out view. You can also see the drawstring I added to the neckline. The chemise is trimmed with some vintage lace I picked up really cheap. 2007 Edit: gore linings make more sense to me now. I would add them if I were to make this today. |
