Dutch Cap

February 2013

A handsewn, fine linen cap for 17th Century Dutch costume. It’s the Reconstructing History pattern #102, View A. The cap didn’t sit quite right, so I used View B instructions, leaving a 2″ gap at the base of the caul. It was the simplest solution and solved my problem. The front seam is wired. A single wig clip was added as a precautionary measure, where the brim meets the caul.
I haven’t yet found anything in the paintings exactly like this cap. Some similar variations are shown below. I suppose it does a good enough job of capturing the look.
