Plaid Skirt

August 2022

Like the Wallace skirt project, this is another Simplicity 8458. A 3 yard length of tartan had been in my stash forever. It’s a nice lightweight twill weave, 90% cotton, 10% wool and very soft. It seemed that 8458, an easy pattern, would pair with it well.
The fabric is an uneven plaid with strong white vertical stripes. After much debate, I decided to cut it on the cross grain. Then spent a good deal of time working out the placement of those white lines. (Wallace is cut on the bias, per the pattern, and I didn’t give the layout a second thought.) The skirt’s hem and zipper are hand sewn.
For a vintage inspired look, the skirt is paired with a Malco Modes petticoat. But it also hangs just fine without any support, as seen in the images below.
