Passacaille Stays

March – July 2026

Another set of RedThreaded 1780s stays. They’re inspired by one of the most challenging female baroque solos in the repertoire, the Passacaille d’Armide. Anna Mansbridge, my wonderful early dance teacher, spent a full year teaching this theatrical epic. Plate by plate, one hour at a time, we eventually covered the whole thing. The choreography is incredibly difficult, both technically and mentally. This is my idea of a reward for the experience – sorceress stays. They’re black silk damask, with a coutil and broadcloth base, bound in petersham ribbon, with black metal eyelets. As you can probably tell, the damask is nearly impossible to photograph. But the pattern is mirrored perfectly on the right and left sides. (Unlike the Passacaille figures.)
